OFFICE OF SURVEYOR GENERAL
ESTIMATE OF THE EXPENSE NECESSARY TO BE INCURRED FOR
Ventilation to Victoria Gaol.
PLAN OR DESCRIPTION.
Page 362
His Excellency the Governor decided in April last that considerable improvements must be made in the Ventilation of the Victoria Gaol, and the removal of the Convicts, from Stone Cutters Island to Victoria in November last has made these improvements the more desirable.
It is proposed to shut off the Corridors by iron railing from the rest of the Gaol (so as to make each corridor in itself a secure prison), and enable the doors of the cells to be left open for ventilation in hot weather. It will at the same time be necessary to stretch wire netting between the galleries to prevent communication between the different floors; the materials for these services have been already ordered from England.
The Debtor's ward has been removed from Bin 7 to the floor over the Superintendent's office, the chief object being to enable the Debtors to receive their friends without the necessity of their being admitted into the Main Building. It becomes necessary therefore to fix Iron Railings, in the Verandah Arches and window openings.
The Verandah Arches in Wings B&D
Approved,
[signed] Richard G. MacDonnell.
Governor.
